The papers of John Shelton Reed begin in the 1960s and include correspondence between Reed and colleagues and friends; letters relating to Reed's publications and the publications of others working on topics of interest to him; reviews of publications, particularly those handled by Reed as book review editor for the journal Social Forces; and other material relating to the study and teaching of sociology, history, southern culture, popular culture, and related fields.
