Abstract
The Reed family settled in Buncombe County, N.C., before 1789. Notable Reed family members include Joseph Reed (1827-1884), a captain in the Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War, who married Catherine Harrison Miller Reed. Joseph's son, Marcus Lafayette Reed (1851-1938), also known as Mark L. Reed and M. L. Reed, was a member of the North Carolina State Legislature, and was chair of the Board of County Commissioners for Buncombe County. His son, Mark L. Reed (1902-1944), was a prominent businessman and aviator in Asheville, N.C. His son, Mark L. Reed (1935- ), was a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1963-2000, and a prominent William Wordsworth scholar.
The collection consists of correspondence, notes, biographical sketches, pictures, financial and legal documents, volumes, clippings, and other materials pertaining to the history of the Reed family of Buncombe County, N.C. Reed family correspondence includes letters to Mark L. Reed (1902-1944) at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University), from his mother, Bethany Barbara Sales Reed, discussing family matters and farming; letters to Edith Alicia Murphy Reed, wife of Mark L. Reed (1902-1944); letters to Mark L. Reed (1935- ); letters to and from Samuel J. Fisher, second husband of Edith Alicia Murphy Reed Fisher; and letters from Joseph Lucius Reed to his family, written while Joseph was serving in the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, discussing daily life in camps and on the battlefront in France. The collection also includes materials, mostly written by Harriet Katherine Reed Whitaker, Ella Osmonia Reed Latham Mathews, and Joseph Lucius Reed (b. 1893), related to the history of the Reed family, as well as the history of the Swannanoa River Valley, which surrounds Asheville, N.C. These materials include correspondence with other genealogists, biographical sketches about various Reed family members, family trees, and genealogical notes. Also included are materials pertaining to the Harrison and McBrayer families, who were related to the Reed family through marriages. The collection also contains other documents, among them financial papers, legal papers, and clippings from newspapers and magazines, related to various members of the Reed family. Included are membership cards, licenses, and certificates belonging to Mark L. Reed (1902-1944), documenting his various affiliations with civic groups and fraternal organizations, as well as his work in the aviation industry, both as a pilot and as an investor. Also included are materials related to Mark L. Reed's death in 1944 from injuries sustained in a plane crash. There are also military documents from Joseph Lucius Reed's service in World War I, documents relating to Edith Alicia Murphy Reed's career as an elementary school teacher, and certificates and clippings documenting the childhood and education of Mark L. Reed (1935- ). Papers related to Samuel J. Fisher include military documents from his service in World War I; financial statements related to his divorce from his first wife, Mary Patterson Fisher; point certificates from American Contract Bridge League tournaments; and sheet music from when Samuel was a member of the Harvard University Glee Club. Biographical Note

The Reed family's history can be traced back to 16th century Britain. The first Reed to reside in the United States was George Reed (1612-1671) who emigrated to Virginia in 1637. William Reed (b. 1738) was the first Reed to settle in what is now Buncombe County, N.C., before 1789. His great-grandson, Joseph Reed (1827-1884), was a captain in the Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War, and was one of the largest landowners in North Carolina. On 1848, Joseph married Catherine Harrison Miller Reed, a descendant of the Harrison family of Virginia, which produced two United States Presidents: William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison. Joseph and Catherine's children include Samuel Harrison Reed (1851-1905), Marcus Lafayette Reed (1853-1938), Thomas Jefferson Reed (1860-1903), and Harriet Katherine Reed Whitaker (1869-1967).

Marcus Lafayette Reed (1853-1938) was a representative for Buncombe County in the North Carolina State Legislature from 1901 to 1904, and was chair of the Board of County Commissioners for Buncombe County, N.C., from 1900 to 1908. He married Fannie Stevens Reed in 1872. After Fannie died in 1881, Marcus married Bethany Barbara Sales Reed in 1882. His children included Ella Osmonia Reed Latham Mathews (1873-1959), Hesta Lena Reed Kitchin (1879-1918), Jessie Reed Burnett (1885-1951), Joseph Lucius Reed (1893-?) and Mark L. Reed (1902-1944).

Mark L. Reed (1902-1944) was a prominent Asheville businessman, serving as president of Reed and Abee, Inc., a contracting firm, and as vice president of White Transportation Company. He was also manager of the Asheville-Hendersonville airport, and was himself an accomplished aviator, serving as wing commander of the Civil Air Patrol in North Carolina. He married Edith Alicia Murphy Reed in 1925, and had one son, Mark L. Reed (1935- ), before his death in 1944 from injuries suffered in a plane crash.

Mark L. Reed (1935- ) was educated at Yale University, where he received his B.A. in 1957, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. He was a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1963 to 2000, and was a prominent William Wordsworth scholar. He married Martha Balch Sibley Reed in 1958.

Detailed Description of the Collection

1. Correspondence, 1864-1996.

About 350 items.
Arrangement: by correspondent and chronologically.
Mark L. Reed (1902-1944) correspondence consists mostly of letters from his mother, Bethany Barbara Sales Reed, to him while he was attending North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University). These letters generally discuss domestic matters, as well as planting, harvesting, and other events on the Reed family farm. In addition, Bethany often exhorted her son to do well in his studies at college. In letters from 25 January to 15 February 1920, she described with growing apprehension the influenza epidemic which hit Asheville, N.C., at the time. Edith Alicia Murphy Reed correspondence mostly comprises letters from friends and family of Edith congratulating her on the birth of her son, Mark L. Reed (1935- ). The correspondence of Mark L. Reed (1935- ) consists almost entirely of letters from Joseph Lucius Reed (b. 1893), Mark L. Reed's uncle, and Charles Wingate Reed, Mark L. Reed's cousin. The letters, dating from 1962 to 1975, chiefly congratulate Mark on his scholarly and personal accomplishments, including his Guggenheim fellowship, his study of William Wordsworth at the University of Cambridge in England, and the births of his children. The letters also mention Joseph's and Charles's own publications, including Rivers of North Carolina - the Swannanoa (Joseph Lucius Reed) and Beaufort County: Two Centuries of Its History (Charles Wingate Reed).
Joseph Lucius Reed correspondence consists of letters written by Joseph, son of Marcus Lafayette Reed, to his mother, Bethany Barbara Sales Reed, and his siblings during his service in Company D, 120th Infantry, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Letters were sent from Camp Jackson, S.C. (21 September-7 October 1917); Camp Sevier, S.C. (17 October 1917-3 May 1918); Camp Merritt, N.J. (14 May 1918); and overseas in England (29 May 1918) and France (11 June 1918-1 March 1919). In the letters from army camps, Joseph related everyday camp life and conditions, including meals, sleeping arrangements, drills, finances, and the difficulty in getting furloughs to visit home. Overseas letters have no details of military engagements (due to military censorship), but do contain descriptions of towns and people encountered by Joseph and his fellow troops. Joseph showed a particular interest in the farm land and agricultural methods of French peasants. In letters written after the armistice, Joseph often expresses uncertainty about when he will be able to return home to North Carolina.
There is also correspondence to and from Samuel J. Fisher, second husband of Edith Alicia Murphy Reed, wife of Mark L. Reed (1902-1944). Most of the correspondence relates to Samuel J. Fisher's divorce from his first wife, Mary Patterson Fisher. Included are Samuel's letters to and from Mary's brother, Howard A. Patterson, discussing the personal acrimony between Samuel and Mary. Also included is a letter from 1864 from "Mary," in Salem, N.C., to "Rufus." The letter was originally filed with the Samuel J. Fisher letters, but the correspondents' relation to Samuel Fisher is unknown. Postcards are generally either unaddressed or are addressed to Gold and Lane family members.

2. Family History and Local History Materials, 1905-1995.

Letters, published and unpublished narratives, and notes related to the genealogies and histories of the Reed family and related families, as well as of the Asheville, N.C., area in which they resided. Reed family genealogical correspondence is written by and to Reed family members, including Ella Osmonia Reed Latham Mathews and Harriet Katherine Reed Whitaker, as well as other persons looking for connections between their families and the Reed family. Reed family genealogies include "Reed Genealogy: 1500-1926," compiled and printed by Harriet Katherine Reed Whitaker, with a handwritten addition by Joseph Lucius Reed. Included among the Reed family biographical sketches is a reminiscence about Bethany Barbara Sales Reed, written by her son, Joseph Lucius Reed, and a biographical essay on Marcus Lafayette Reed, written by his daughter Ella Osmonia Reed Latham Mathews.
There is also considerable correspondence to and from Harriet Katherine Reed Whitaker related to the history of the Harrison family, to which the Reeds were related through Catherine Harrison Miller Reed, Harriet's mother. Catherine's grandfather, Joseph Harrison (1737-1811), was a cousin of United States President William Henry Harrison. Included in the correspondence are letters to Harriet from other Harrisons requesting information on her branch of the family, as well as a family tree of the Harrison family and Harriet's application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, which displays her relation to the Harrison family. Other genealogical materials include those of the McBrayer family, related to the Reed family through Lavina McBrayer Reed, grandmother of Marcus Lafayette Reed. Materials written by Joseph Lucius Reed include a history of the Swannanoa Valley, the land surrounding Asheville, N.C., as well as a biographical sketch of Billy Brown, a friend of Joseph Reed (1827-1884), and a history of Gashes Creek Church, a Baptist church outside of Asheville, N.C., of which Joseph Reed (1827-1884) was a founding member.

Correspondence, financial and legal documents, clippings, certificates, and other materials related to various members of the Reed family. Included is an official copy of the will and testament of David McBrayer, grandfather of Marcus Lafayette Reed, dated 12 October 1816. Marcus Lafayette Reed materials include a newspaper article commemorating his 82nd birthday, containing information on his career in the North Carolina state legislature. Mark L. Reed (1902-1944) materials include workbooks from his primary school classes, membership cards to various community and fraternal organizations, licenses and certificates related to his status as a pilot, and clippings, programs, and church bulletins related to Mark's death on 6 September 1944 of injuries sustained in a plane crash. Edith Alicia Murphy Reed Fisher materials include her teaching certificate and assignments completed by students in her elementary school class. The collection also contains military documents from Joseph Lucius Reed's service in World War I, as well as certificates and clippings documenting the childhood and education of Mark L. Reed (1935- ).
Documents related to Samuel J. Fisher, Edith Murphy Reed's second husband, are numerous. Military records include his honorable discharge certificate from the United States Army, and a presidential certificate commemorating his service in World War I. Legal documents include statements of assets and articles of agreement relating to Samuel J. Fisher's divorce from his first wife, Mary Patterson Fisher. Also included are point certificates from American Contract Bridge League matches in which Samuel participated, as well as love poems and birthday poems sent to Samuel, likely by Mary Patterson Fisher. Most of the sheet music included in this series dates from Samuel J. Fisher's participation in the Harvard University Glee Club. It mostly consists of various arrangements for men's chorus, including Harvard school songs. There are also documents related to Lane family members, who were related to the Reed family.

Military medals awarded to Joseph Reed (1827-1884) and Joseph Lucius Reed (1893- ) and medals awarded to Samuel J. Fisher for academic pursuits. Included among the military medals is a Confederate Cross of Honor awarded to Joseph Reed for his service in the Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War. Also included are two medals given to Joseph Lucius Reed. One was awarded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy for his participation in World War I as the descendant of a Confederate veteran. The other is a World War I Victory Medal rewarding his service in the Ypres-Lys campaign in France. Samuel J. Fisher's medals document his involvement in the Kit Kat Club and the Glee Club at Asheville School in Asheville, N.C., as well as his membership in the D. U. Club at Harvard University.
