Julian Hart Robertson (1899-1995) was born in Wilmington, N.C. He was graduated from Clemson College with a B.S. in textile engineering in 1919. Robertson was active in North Carolina textile manufacturing around Salisbury and Lexington, N.C., for many years, and served in various capacities with textile organizations, including as president of the North Carolina Cotton Manufacturers' Association in the 1950s. Robertson married Blanche Spencer of Martinsville, Va., in 1931; the couple had three children: Julian, Jr., Blanche, and Wyndham.

Letters, writings, photographs, and other materials relating to Julian Hart Robertson and other members of the Robertson family. Included is a small number of items pertaining to Robertson's textile career. Family materials consist of letters, including some documenting Robertson's service in World War I and World War II; clippings; and photogarphs. The bulk of the materials relate to Robertson's interest in genealogy and include source materials and other items Robertson used in writing The Family of William and Elizabeth Bolling Robertson of Richmond, Virginia, 1585-1981 (1981, with James Samuel Patton) and The Story of Frederick Williams Robertson and Charlotte (Reynolds) Hackett Robertson (1969).
