Marmaduke Swaim Robins, lawyer and teacher in Randolph County, N.C.; private secretary to Governor Zebulon Vance during part of the Civil War, and North Carolina legislator during and after the war; and chairman of the State Senate committee investigating North Carolina railroads, 1867.

Scattered papers of Robins include family letters and business papers; official correspondence and records about internal military affairs of the state during the Civil War, particularly about deserters and lawlessness; letters from friends and relatives in the army and civilians in Randolph County, N.C., during the war; papers pertaining to a railroad investigation by the legislature in 1867; and slight political correspondence. Correspondents include Thomas J. Jarvis, David Lowry Swain, C. H. Wiley, Thomas Ruffin, Zebulon B. Vance, and Jonathan Worth.
