Robert Timpany Roche was born in February 1823. His parents, William and Mary Ann, resided in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Roche served as a missionary in the United States and as an Episcopal clergyman in both Canada and the United States. While living on Canada's Prince Edward Island, he served as rector for Georgetown and was elected to the Prince Edward Island Orange Association in February 1862. He was a grand officer in the organization and acted as its chaplain. His positions in the United States included pastorates in Riverton, N.J.; St. Paul's Church of Philadelphia; Christ Church of Muscatine, Iowa; Palatka, Fla.; Monticello, Fla.; and St. James' Church of Eatontown, N.J. The spelling of Roche's name is alternately given as "Roach" up to, at least, 1864.

Book of excerpts compiled by Episcopal minister  R. T. Roche in the middle of the 19th century. The book contains hand-copied excerpts from several texts, at least two of which are concerned with alchemy and the fabled Philosopher's Stone. The markings in the book indicate that it was in Roche's possession during his years at St. Paul's Church of Philadelphia, ca. 1871, and St. James' Church of Eatontown, N.J.
