The collection includes the notebooks of Sanders containing detailed observations of birds and their nests within a seven-mile radius of Chapel Hill, N.C., and 57 color photographs illustrating these observations taken by Wallace Patterson, professional photographer.

Wiley Britton Sanders (1898-1973) was an authority on criminology, pioneer in social work, and professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was also a bird watching enthusiast and was active with the Chapel Hill Bird Club.
