Abstract
Charles Milton Shaffer, a native of Greensboro, N.C., attended the University of North Carolina, where he played football and received a B.S. in commerce in 1935. After several years in business, Shaffer returned to Chapel Hill in 1952 to be the University's director of development, a position he held until 1981. Shaffer was active in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and other civic organizations in Chapel Hill and in the Episcopal Chapel of the Cross. Shaffer married Charlotte Blanton Winborne, also a graduate of the University of North Carolina (A.B. 1934). Charlotte Winborne Shaffer was the daughter of John Wallace Winborne (1884-1966), who served on the North Carolina Supreme Court, 1937-1962, and was chief justice, 1956-1962.
Papers of Charles Milton Shaffer contain personal correspondence, files relating to his participation in the University of North Carolina alumni affairs and Chapel Hill civic organizations, and files relating to his service on committees of the Chapel of the Cross and of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. The collection also contains bound typescripts of the opinions of Justice John Wallace Winborne, 1937-1962. Files relating to alumni activities mostly have to do with reunions of the class of 1935. Also included are records relating to Shaffer's participation, after his retirement, in the University's Bicentennial fundraising campaign. Photographs include one of Shaffer as a football player at the University of North Carolina, one of an unidentified football player, and one of an unidentified woman.
