Leander Quincy Sharpe (1816-1866) was a lawyer, of Statesville, Iredell County, N.C., and member of the North Carolina state legislature. Sharpe attended Davidson College, 1838-1839, but did not complete his studies due to poor health. He married Mary Emmeline McKee of Iredell County, 19 March 1845. They settled in Statesville where Sharpe practiced law. Sharpe was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1856, 1864, and 1865. He was a member of the State Senate from 1860 to 1862. A short time before his death he was elected solicitor for the Iredell District, at that time including the entire Western part of the state.

The collection includes papers of Leander Quincy Sharpe and consist primarily of wills, deeds, legal correspondence and proceedings, and personal bills and accounts in the 1850s. Also included are eight letters from Sharpe to his wife, Mary Emmeline (McKee) Sharpe, while he was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly during the Civil War, discussing only his health and making references to family members. There are also some papers of other members of the Sharpe family including letters to Tizrah Sharpe, one from her cousin Robert D. Gorrell written while imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, 1864; and one from Henry A. Chambers of the 49th North Carolina Regiment, May 1865, concerning his disillusionment upon returning home at the close of the war.
