| Abstract | Jane Fennell, also referred to as Jean, of Wilmington, N.C., and Edward Shuford were married in 1918, following Edward's graduation from Kansas City Veterinary School. Shortly after, Edward was stationed in France with the Army in World War I, returning in April of 1919. In 1920, Edward and Jane had their first child, Mary McKay, and in 1925 Jane died. Edward sent Mary McKay to be raised by Jane's sister Nell in Virginia and continued his work as a veterinarian in Asheville, N.C. The collection is primarily correspondence of Edward Shuford and Jane Fennell Shuford. Letters to Jane are from her mother, Mary Elizabeth Fennell, and sisters discussing school, work, illnesses, and everyday life in Wilmington. There are also love letters from her husband Edward while he was attending the Kansas City Veterinary School and while serving in France during World War I. Later letters are to Edward in Asheville from friends, family, and veterinary organizations. Financial papers include checks, receipts, and miscellaneous materials. Other papers include church materials, medical and veterinary records, news clippings, school papers of Jane's sister Nell, programs, and holiday cards, among other items. Photographs are of Edward in uniform, Jane, and unidentified persons. |

Biographical Information
Jane Fennell Shuford was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Fennell of Wilmington, N.C. Jane, also referred to as Jean, attended the State Normal and Industrial College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and married Edward Shuford in 1918, following Edward's graduation from Kansas City Veterinary School. Shortly after, Edward was stationed in France with the army in World War I, returning in April of 1919. In 1920, Edward and Jane had their first child, Mary McKay, and in 1925 Jane died. Letters from Jane's mother, sisters, and friends discussing school, work, illnesses, and everyday life in eastern North Carolina are predominately found in folders 1-14 and 26. Love letters between Jane and Edward while he attended the Kansas City Veterinary School and served in France during World War I are predominately found in folders 15-25. Later letters to Edward from friends, family, and veterinary organizations are predominately found in folders 27-29.
