Abstract George W. Simpson served in Company A of the 33rd Illinois Infantry Regiment for over four years during the Civil War. The collection consists of two letters written by George W. Simpson to Miss Twitchett, while he was serving in the United States Army. Twitchett was apparently unknown to Simpson prior to his writing to her. In the letter of 6 February 1865, Simpson discussed the hardship of being a soldier and provided a short physical description of himself. The letter of 6 April 1865 was written while on the front during the siege of Mobile, Ala., and describes the daily life of a soldier there as well as the general state of army affairs.
