Abstract Benjamin R. Smith, captain in Company G, 6th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, was captured at Rappahannock Bridge, Va., 1863, and imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, until his release in June 1865. The collection contains an album that consists largely of autographs of fellow Confederate officers collected by Smith while he was imprisoned. Autographs include prisoner's name, rank, unit, home address, and where captured. Also included is a pen-and-ink drawing of Johnson Island Prison by G. W. Melvin.

Benjamin R. Smith (fl. 1863-1865) was a captain in Company G, 6th North Carolina Infantry captured at Rappahannock Bridge, Va., November 1863. He was imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. then Johnson's Island, Ohio, until his release in June 1865.

The collection includes an album largely filled with autographs of fellow Confederate officers collected by Benjamin R. Smith while he was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Autographs include prisoner's name, rank, unit, home address, and where captured. Also included is a pen-and-ink drawing of Johnson's Island Prison by G. W. Melvin and a copy of a letter of a man condemned to die as a spy.
