Abstract Genealogist Claiborne T. Smith Jr. lived in Ardmore, Pa. The collection includes genealogical correspondence and data compiled by Claiborne T. Smith Jr., chiefly relating to the Claiborne, Smith, Norfleet, Baker, Evans, and allied families in Perquimans, Gates, Chowan, Bertie, Northampton, Halifax, Edgecombe, and Pitt counties, N.C., and Brunswick, Sussex, Surry, Southampton, Isle of Wight, and Nansemond counties, Va. Also included are letters to Smith from his father, Claiborne T. Smith (1893-1989), physician of Rocky Mount, N.C., including one about African Americans in northeastern North Carolina in the early 20th century; from landscape painter Francis Speight (1896-1989) of Greenville, N.C.; from Speight's widow, Sarah Blakeslee Speight (1912- ), landscape and portrait painter of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and historical material relating to Scotland Neck, N.C.
