Abstract James Stuart was a physician of Beaufort, S.C. The collection is a diary of Stuart's journey through the Piedmont of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, western Maryland, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York City, and the Hudson River Valley; his stay with northern relatives, and the return trip through Delaware, Baltimore, Md., Washington, D.C., and the coastal plain. Stuart kept a record of daily mileage, expenses, accommodations, and the sights for every town through which he passed, and gauged the sentiments of the people toward the War of 1812 from a Federalist viewpoint.
