The collection consists of the unpublished manuscript of Mary Elizabeth Swanson's senior thesis from Elon College, titled "Living North Carolina Poets" and dated 15 May 1923. The work includes biographical information that Swanson collected from correspondence with poets and writers living or born in North Carolina. The final section of the volume lists the names of North Carolina poets, but does not provide any biographical information about them.
