| Abstract | Frank V. Taylor of Charlotte, N.C., joined the United States Army in 1943 where he trained in the engineering program. He traveled all over the United States including Hawaii and in 1944 was stationed in the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific. He was hospitalized in late 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1945 because of his injuries. After his discharge, he returned to Charlotte, N.C. The collection contains letters of Frank V. Taylor written before and during his World War II service in the United States Army. Taylor's letters are primarily to his wife, Jane Taylor. Topics include Taylor's military training and engineering program, his travels, the war in the Pacific, and financial and family matters. There are also a 1943 letter from Taylor to his wife's parents acknowledging a gift and a 1940 letter to his sister from a friend inquiring about the sister's well being. |

Biographical Information
Frank V. Taylor of Charlotte, N.C., joined the United States Army in 1943. He trained in the engineering program, where he traveled during this time to Saint Louis, Mo.; Biloxi, Miss.; San Antonio, Tex.; San Francisco, Calif.; and Hawaiian Islands. In 1944, he was stationed in the Gilbert Islands where he continued his engineering work in the war zone. In late 1944, he was hospitalized and, later in 1945, honorably discharged because of his injuries. After his discharge, he returned to Charlotte, N.C.

Scope and Content
This collection contains letters of Frank V. Taylor of Charlotte, N.C., written before and during his service in the United States Army during World War II. Letters are primarily to his wife, Jane Taylor. In his letters home, Taylor described the cities and places he visited. Included is a description of the culture and scenery of the Gilbert Islands. He also discussed military life and gave some information about his engineer training. He briefly mentioned war events in some letters and provided his opinion in some instances. In many letters, Taylor discussed family matters, such as finances, family planning, and health issues. He also inquired about relatives, some of whom were in the military and serving in Europe. A February 1943 letter contains a life insurance policy. There is also a 1943 letter to his wife's parents thanking them for a birthday gift, and a 1940 letter to his sister, Sarah Taylor, from her friend, Ruth Beatly, who inquired about Sarah's college life and general well being.
