Biographical NoteIrving Thigpen, presumably of Edgecombe County, N.C., possibly kept a general store ledger from 1885 to 1889. Back to TopCollection OverviewThe collection is a general store ledger, 1885-1889, possibly kept by Irvin Thigpen of Edgecombe County, N.C. The ledger is organized by customers' names and includes dates, items and amounts purchased, and prices. The bulk of the ledger was kept from 1 October 1885 to March 1889, but a short portion of the ledger under the heading Lexington, Ky., was kept from 1 January 1885 to 1 December 1885 and separated from the main run of the ledger. This portion also includes financial information such as stock purchases and sales, debits and credits, expenses, bills, and what might be cash loans. At the end of the ledger are pages apparently used for handwriting practice that include the alphabet, rhymes, and names of a number of cities, such as Raleigh, N.C., Wilmington, N.C., Scotland Neck, N.C., and Norfolk, Va.
