William Lindsey Thornburg (born circa 1837), a farmer from Randolph County, N.C., served in the 38th North Carolina Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.

The volume contains records of exemption applications for Confederate conscripts maintained by William Lindsey Thornburg in 1864. Many of the records in the volume have been covered by newspaper and other clippings pasted into the volume. Some of the clippings have dates circa 1890, though it is unclear whether all of the clippings are from the same period. The clippings include poetry, short stories, and print images of buildings in North Carolina and South Carolina.
