The collection contains letters from Tompkins of Binghamton, N.Y., to his wife, Helen Charlotte Backus Tompkins, written while he was traveling in North Carolina and other places. Tompkins discussed Nullification, Willie P. Mangum, agricultural conditions especially in North Carolina, and political events in Washington, D.C., including the tariff debate of 1833. |

Scope and Content
The collection contains letters from Isaac Tompkins of Binghamton, N.Y., to his wife, Helen Charlotte Backus Tompkins, written while he was traveling in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Tompkins discussed Nullification, Willie Person Mangum, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, Isaac Erwin Avery, Andrew Jackson, agricultural conditions especially in North Carolina, and political events in Washington, D.C., including the tariff debate of 1833.
