Glenn Irving Tucker (born 1892) was an author, journalist, and historian of Buncombe County, N.C. Tucker was born in Indiana and was educated at DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., and Columbia University School of Journalism, New York, N.Y. He worked in the newspaper and advertising business in New York City; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Washington, D.C., for over 30 years. He moved to western North Carolina in 1948 to write history and biography. His published works include Poltroons and Patriots: A Popular Account of the War of 1812 (1954), Tecumseh: Vision of Glory (1956), High Tide at Gettysburg (1958), Hancock the Superb (1960), Chickamauga: Bloody Battle in the West (1961), Front Rank (1962), Dawn Like Thunder: The Barbary Wars and the Birth of the U. S. Navy (1963), Zeb Vance: Champion of Personal Freedom (1966), Lee and Longstreet at Gettysburg (1968), and The War of 1812: A Compact History (1969).

The collection includes correspondence of Glenn Tucker, chiefly 1956-1971, relating to several of his books and writings, especially those on Civil War topics; and research materials, notes, and miscellaneous collected data. Tucker's correspondents include editors and publishers, other writers, and many Civil War enthusiasts. The correspondence concerns plans for writing books and articles, arrangements for publication, the location of source materials, and the reception and discussion of the works by readers. Correspondence with other writers and with Civil War Round Table members concerns personal news as well as discussions of work in progress, historical data, and especially controversial points in Confederate military history. The focus of the Civil War discussions was the reputation of Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet and the battle of Gettysburg.

The correspondence also reflects Tucker's historical writing and publications. Mentioned in the papers are articles written for Civil War Times Illustrated and the North Carolina Historical Review , as well as some of his full length books, primarily High Tide at Gettysburg (1958), Zeb Vance (1966), and Lee and Longstreet at Gettysburg (1968). Most titles are represented to a lesser degree, though there does not appear to be material related to Poltroons and Patriots (1954), Front Rank (1962), or The War of 1812 (1969).

The correspondence also contains references to literary awards received, service on literary and historical boards and committees in North Carolina, invitations to speak, and occasionally mention political campaigns and general current events.

In addition to the correspondence, there are some drafts of articles by Tucker, notes and excerpts for use in writing, historical articles and chapters received from other, and miscellaneous collected materials including clippings.
