Research materials and other items relating to the writing and publication of The North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (1993) by Henry S. M. Uhl. These materials document the operation of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program began in 1972 with the purpose of addressing the need for improved geographic distribution of well-qualified health professionals in medically underserved areas of the state. The Program provides for nine regional centers that offer education and training for health professionals in their own communities. The AHECs act as bridges between the four North Carolina university medical centers and the state's community hospitals, health agencies, and health professionals.
