Historical Note

The Unitarian Universalist Church is a religious tradition formed through a merging of two religious denominations in 1961: the Universalists (founded in 1793), and the Unitarians (founded in 1825). The Universalist Convention of North Carolina was formed in 1895 with the goal of promoting coordinated growth of Universalism in eastern North Carolina. In 1905, the Convention received a charter of incorporation from the state, giving it non-profit status. It is comprised of various Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist congregations across the state; it publishes a newsletter called The Tar Heel Universalist.
