Historical Information
Television station WTVD began broadcasting in Durham, N.C., on 2 September 1954. According to local newspaper accounts, the station was founded by Floyd Fletcher and Harmon Duncan, two local radio station owners. With the financial backing of about 60 local investors, the two men established Durham Broadcasting Enterprises. The station was later purchased by Capital Cities Communications, Inc., and became an ABC affiliate in 1985, after previous affiliations with NBC and CBS.
The station moved to its downtown Durham location in 1978 and donated a portion of its property to Durham County as the site of the public library. One of the oldest television stations serving the Raleigh-Durham area, WTVD broadcasts regional news and community service programming, including the locally produced shows Reflections, Reel Perspectives, Primetime, Primetime Saturday, and Primetime Sunday.
