The collection contains two letters, 1834, to Eliza Murphy Walton, at school in Pittsboro, N.C., from family and friends in Morganton, N.C., giving local news; two letters, 1861-1862, exchanged between Eliza Murphy Walton and her husband, while he was serving with the Confederate army near Wilmington, N.C.; and one letter, 1863, to John Caldwell from John M. Walton in camp near Franklin Depot, Va.
