Washington Daily News of Washington, N.C., began in 1872 as Washington Gazette. It subsequently operated under the titles Evening Messenger, 1886-1907, and Daily Messenger, 1907-1913, acquiring its current title in 1913.

Scope and Content
The collection includes histories and descriptions of 115 churches in Beaufort County, N.C., gathered and compiled by the staff of the Washington, N.C., Daily News for their Annual Tobacco Edition, 19 August 1952, the theme of which was the churches of Beaufort County. The material consists of questionnaires sent to churches, responses received, and other information compiled by the reporting staff. There are also other items relating to the special edition and an explanatory letter, 1953, from Raymond M. Taylor.
