| Abstract | Joseph H. Young (1832?-1867) of Mifflin County, Pa., was a federal soldier who served with the 184th Pennsylvania Regiment in Virginia during the Civil War. The collection includes Civil War letters of Young to and from his wife, Ann Eliza Young, while he was with the army near Richmond, Va., and Petersburg, Va., and while he was hospitalized; and some papers concerning Young's military service and application for pensions. Letters exchange news of friends in the service, contain requests for items from home, discuss possibility of leaves, and note the desertion of Confederate soldiers to the North. Letters during Young's hospitalization discuss his health, treatment, and the possibility of discharge. |
