Born in 1929, Morris "Big" Chenier was raised in the farming community of Opelousas. He learned guitar and violin before moving to Lake Charles. In the late 1950s, he toured the region both as a solo artist and backing up his nephew, the renowned zydeco artist Clifton Chenier. In 1957, Big Chenier recorded several blues tracks for Goldband, including "Let Me Hold Your Hand" and "Please Try to Realize," and later recorded a zydeco session that has never been issued. Big Chenier's music was highly regarded locally. But despite Eddie Shuler's attempt to get Chenier back in the recording studio, he was content instead to tour occasionally and hold dances at the "Chenier Barbecue and Smoke House" that he owned on Enterprise Boulevard in Lake Charles.
