Born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly Rebecca Parton was the fourth of 12 children. Her mother was a singer and taught her church music and ballads. When she was seven, her Uncle Bill Owens gave her a guitar and within three years she became a regular on The Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour on WIVK in Knoxville.
Dolly's Uncle Henry Owens was in the military stationed at a base in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Henry lived close to Goldband and made friends with owner Eddie Shuler. Henry thought the connection with Goldband was a perfect opportunity for Dolly to make her first single and suggested she take the bus from Tennessee to Louisiana. Dolly recorded her first single Puppy Love for Goldband Records in 1960 at the age of 13. The song was written by Dolly Parton and her Uncle Bill.
Eddie Shuler remembers that the tallest stool in the studio was used "so the microphone could fit and we could get the fullest capabilities of the song she was recording." In her autobiography Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, Dolly recalls falling in love with Eddie's son Johnny and sneaking off with him to sit under an oak tree behind the recording studio.
