Gabriel Dean Leneau was born in Marksville, Louisiana in 1945. Gabe began singing to entertain groups at the age of four. At age nine, Gabe got his first guitar and the following year he won a singing contest on a local radio station. Gabe recorded "Slop and Stroll Jolie Blonde" for Goldband in 1961 while still a sophomore in high school.
