2010 VISITING SCHOLARS GRANT PROGRAM

The Southern Historical Collection (SHC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will award five visiting scholar grants in 2010:

Joel Williamson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1200 award)
African Americans or race relations in the American South

Guion Griffis Johnson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
American South with a preference for women's history

John Eugene and Barbara Hilton Cay Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
American South with a preference for literary topics

J. Carlyle Sitterson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
American South with a preference for antebellum topics

Parker-Dooley University of North Carolina System Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award)
American South

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars who plan to use the resources available in the Southern Historical Collection are eligible to receive the Williamson, Cay, Johnson, and Sitterson awards.

Faculty and graduate students at a UNC System school and faculty in the North Carolina Community College System who plan to use the resources available in the Southern Historical Collection are eligible to receive the Parker-Dooley award.

Foreign nationals must independently obtain a social security number and a visa before grant funds can be issued to them.

Each award recipient must make at least one in-person research visit to the SHC between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.

Following the research visit, each award recipient will submit a brief publishable statement (300-600 words) describing the research visit and summarizing the results of research in the SHC's collections. This statement must be submitted to the SHC no later than July 31, 2011. The statement will be published in the Library's print and online publications.

APPLICATION:

The application form is available online and from the Southern Historical Collection.

To apply, submit an application form, a brief prospectus (300-450 words) describing the project and the relevance of SHC's holdings to that project, and a brief, signed statement from either an advisor or a colleague in support of the proposed work in the Southern Historical Collection for this project.
