#40004 RECORDS OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA (SYSTEM) in the University Archives and Records Services Wilson Library, CB# 3926 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514-8890 January 1992 On July 1, 1972, the Consolidated University of North Carolina was expanded to include sixteen campuses, and its Board of Trustees was replaced by a Board of Governors. The Board of Governors, made up of thirty-two members elected by the North Carolina General Assembly, was given responsibility for "the general determination, control, supervision, management, and governance of all affairs of the constituent institutions." Much of the business of the Board of Governors is conducted through its four standing committees: the Committee on Budget and Finance; the Committee on Personnel and Tenure; and the Committee on University Governance. A preliminary Planning Committee, made up of representatives of each of the constituent institutions, met from January to July 1972 to establish and co-ordinate the organization and functions of the Board prior to its first official meeting on July 7, 1972. It was not related to the Board's standing Committee on Educational Planning. Reports from all four standing committees and the minutes of the preliminary Planning Committee are included in the minutes of the Board of Governors.
