#40014 THE RECORDS OF THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR UNIVERSITY RELATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA (SYSTEM) in the University Archives and Records Service Wilson Library, CB# 3926 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514-8890 June 1990 May 1996 March 2004 Described here are the official records of the office of Vice President for University Relations of the University of North Carolina system (previously called the Consolidated University), the system of public higher education in North Carolina. The office was first held by Frederick H. Weaver, who was appointed Vice President for Administration on February 24, 1964. In 1966 the title of his position was changed to Vice President for University Relations. In 1970 the title reverted to Vice President for Administration. Weaver had served from 1961 as Secretary of the University, a position whose duties included acting as liaison between the University system and its Board of Trustees. When he became Vice President in February 1964, the position of Secretary was allowed to lapse. Thus, although Weaver assumed broader administrative responsibilities as Vice President, he continued to perform a number of the duties he had as Secretary, particularly those involving the Board of Trustees. He also advised the President of the University on matters relating to state government and the General Assembly of North Carolina as well as to all other external agencies with which the University had an official relationship. The individuals who followed Weaver as Vice President for Administration had the same basic responsibilities. With the resignation of Ferebee Taylor in 1972, the position lapsed and its duties were distributed to other positions. Those who held the position of Vice President for University Relations/Administration are listed below. Vice President for Administration Frederick H. Weaver 1964-1965 Vice President for University Relations Frederick H. Weaver 1965-1968 Vice President for University Relations Henry W. Lewis (Acting) 1968-1969 Vice President for Administration Richard H. Robinson 1969-1970 (Acting) Vice President for Administration N. Though they reflect some of the duties and responsibilities of the Vice President for University Relations, there is very little material relating to the Board of Trustees, the General Assembly, or other agencies with whom he worked. The records of the Vice President for University Relations are divided into two series, as follows: SERIES # BOX # TITLE 1 1-2 Administrative Files 2 1-2 Outside Organizations SERIES 1: ADMINISTRATIVE FILES This series reflects the duties and responsibilities of the Vice President for University Relations related to the Office of General Administration of the University system.
