     These files contain the records of the Assistant to the
Provost, Carl Smith, from 1972 to 1989.  They also contain a
small amount of material kept by Mr. Smith when he was an
administrative intern in the Provost’s Offce in 1972.  Mr. Smith
handled primarily matters of budget and finance, and was the
liaison for financial matters to the various offices reporting to
the Provost.   He also administrated the affirmative action and
minority recruitment and retention programs for the Division of
Academic Affairs.  Carl Smith retired May 31, 1995.  He was
succeeded by Kathleen F. McGaughey, whose title is now Assistant
Provost for Finance.

     The files are in alphabetical order, as listed on the inventory
that follows.  Most pertain to offices reporting to the Provost, some
to offices elsewhere in the University or to other universities.  A
few are listed by subject.
