     The Circulation Department, dating from the late 1920s, was
one of the first library departments created. Early in its
development the circulation function was coupled with that of
reference, with the staff responsible for periodicals, reserve
reading, and the library's special holdings in law, the sciences,
education, etc., as well as handling repair of books. Gradually
with the establishment of departmental/school libraries and of
specialized divisions within the main library, the Circulation
Department's responsibility was focused on the main collection.
Currently the Department is part of the Library's Public Services
Division.

     The records of the department relate to the era when the
staff was multi-functional, as mentioned above. In form, the
records consist of volumes and ledger sheets. The volumes contain
individual student and faculty borrowing records. The ledger
sheets reflect monthly circulation of holdings by departmental
libraries and Wilson Library departments. Miscellaneous
statistics, i.e. fines collected, repairs made, etc., are also
recorded monthly on separate ledger sheets. An inventory of the
