The Association began as a service and social organization, membership in which was automatic for all library staff. Its activities included maintaining the staff room, sponsoring social functions, and recognizing staff members on special occasions. The records contain reports from the Association's standing committees -- the Executive Board, the Social, Publications, Gifts and Flowers, and Staff Room Committees -- and from several special committees convened as necessary. The Staff Association ceased to function as an organization in 1996, although it was not formally dissolved until 1999. The majority of its functions had been taken over by the following committees: the Staff Development Committee, formed in 1981; the SPA Forum, begun in April 1994; the Health and Safety Committee, begun in November 1995; and the Employee Appreciation and Recognition Committee, begun in March 1996.
