The Department was established in 1891, though courses in history had been taught by various members of the faculty prior to that time. It was known as the Department of History until 1920, when its name was changed to Department of History and Government to reflect the incorporation of political science courses into the curriculum. In 1935 the Department of Political Science was founded, and the government courses previously taught as part of the history curriculum were transferred to it. The name of the Department of History and Government then reverted to Department of History. Chairmen of the Department since its founding in 1891 and their tenures are given below. There is some material relating to the undergraduate and graduate curricula, as well as minutes of faculty meetings, annual reports, budgets, and routine administrative memoranda.
