#40133 DIVISION OF DEVELOPMENT AND UNIVERSITY RELATIONS: RECORDS OF THE ASSISTANT TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR AND ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY COUNSEL (PAUL BALDASARE) in the University Archives and Records Service Wilson Library, CB# 3926 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514-8890 December 1999 The records of the legal assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations currently held by the University Archives are those of Paul Baldasare, who held the position beginning in February 1990. For most of his tenure, Baldasare’s title was Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, and Associate University Counsel. The records relate to the Bicentennial of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and range in date from 1988 to 1995, with most of the material falling between 1991 and 1993. Items that predate 1990 are Baldasare’s copies of background information. Baldasare worked primarily with contracts and other legal issues related to events planned by the University as part of its Bicentennial celebration. His files are arranged in two sections: those dealing with the Bicentennial Campaign and those dealing with the Bicentennial Observance. The Bicentennial Campaign was a four-year campaign to raise funds for the University. Its initial goal of $320 million was surpassed, and a new goal of $400 million and established and met. The files in the Bicentennial Campaign section of this records group are generally related to preparations for fund raising events rather than to specific donors or gifts. Much of the material relates to the Campaign kickoff, which occurred at a dinner on October 11, 1991. This event, emceed by Charles Kuralt, was attended by donors, potential donors, University officials, and alumni and featured performances by James Taylor and a choral group of 150-200 North Carolina schoolchildren. The Bicentennial Observance was a series of commemorative events that began on University Day (October 12) 1993 and ended with the Commencement (May 15) of 1994. Baldasare’s Bicentennial Observance files relate primarily to contractual and payment issues associated with various Observance events and projects. The University commissioned artwork, documentaries, and other programs designed to explore the University's history and commemorate its 200th anniversary. The University Day 1993 program included a speech by President Clinton and a performance by the North Carolina Symphony of Richard Adler's The University of North Carolina Bicentennial Commemorative Suite, a symphony written specifically for the event. In August 1995 the position of Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations was eliminated. In April 1996 an administrative reorganization of the University took place, and the position of Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement was created. Pursuant to these changes, Baldasare’s duties were revised and he became Associate University Counsel and Director, Government Relations. This records group, however, contains no files related to his later duties. For more information on the University’s Bicentennial, see the Records of the Bicentennial Observance Office as well as the Records of the Office of Chancellor: Paul Hardin Series in the University Archives.
