     The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Rho
Chapter of the Alpha Chi Sigma collegiate chemistry fraternity
began in 1909 as the Order of the Khems.  In 1910-1911 it was
known as Chi Eta Mu, and in 1912 it joined the national Alpha Chi
Sigma organization as the Rho Chapter.  Detailed background
information on the group's history can be found in Maurice
Bursey's book Carolina Chemists.

     Alpha Chi Sigma is a professional chemistry fraternity,
although the members regard it in many ways as a social
fraternity as well.  The national fraternity is divided into
collegiate and professional divisions, which work closely
together, the professional members providing guidance and
information for the collegiate.
