BOARD OF TRUSTEES RECORD GROUPS

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the University. From the founding of the University in 1789 until 1932, the Board was a 40-member body elected by the North Carolina General Assembly. From the creation of the Consolidated University system in 1932 until 1972, there were no separate boards of trustees for the constituent campuses; a single, 100-member Board governed the system. After the expansion of the system in 1972 to include 16 campuses, individual boards were created for each campus and a Board of Governors was constituted as the governing body for the new University of North Carolina System.

The record groups listed below derive from the original Board of Trustees and from the post-1972 Board appointed to govern the Chapel Hill campus. For records of the governing bodies of the University of North Carolina System, see University of North Carolina (System).
