Abstract The Vice President for University Relations of the University of North Carolina (System) advised the President on matters involving, and served as liaison with, the Trustees of the System, the North Carolina General Assembly, agencies of state government, and other outside agencies with which the University had official relationships. The office originated in 1950 as Assistant to the President and was subsequently called Secretary of the University, Vice President for Administration, and then in 1966 Vice President for University Relations. After 1969, the duties of the Vice President were distributed to other offices. Records include correspondence and other files of a general administrative nature, relating to the University system. The records in this group are largely those of Frederick H. Weaver, who held the office from 1961 to 1968; and although they reflect some of his duties, they contain little material relating to the Trustees or the General Assembly.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

Frederick H. Weaver became the first Vice President for Administration of the University of North Carolina (System), earlier called the Consolidated University of North Carolina, on 24 February 1964. In 1966 the title of his position was changed to Vice President for University Relations. In 1970 the title reverted to Vice President for Administration.

Weaver had served from 1961 as Secretary of the University, a position whose duties included acting as liaison between the University system and its Board of Trustees. When he became Vice President in February 1964, the position of Secretary was allowed to lapse. Thus, although Weaver assumed broader administrative responsibilities as Vice President, he continued to perform a number of the duties he had as Secretary, particularly those involving the Board of Trustees. He also advised the President of the University on matters relating to state government and the General Assembly of North Carolina as well as to all other external agencies with which the University had an official relationship.

The individuals who followed Weaver as Vice President for Administration had the same basic responsibilities. With the resignation of Ferebee Taylor in 1972, the position lapsed and its duties were distributed to other positions. Those who held the position of Vice President for University Relations/Administration are listed below.

1964-1965 Frederick H. Weaver, Vice President for Administration
1965-1968 Frederick H. Weaver, Vice President for University Relations
1968-1969 Henry W. Lewis, Acting Vice President for University Relations
1969-1970 Richard H. Robinson, Acting Vice President for Administration
1970-1972 N. Ferebee Taylor, Vice President for Administration

This series reflects the duties and responsibilities of the Vice President for University Relations related to the Office of General Administration of the University system. It includes records concerning matters of general interest to all the campuses of the system. There is very little material related to the Board of Trustees, the General Assembly, or other agencies with whom the Vice President worked. See Series 2 of these records for the Vice President's files on some of the agencies of the state of North Carolina with which he had both official and unofficial dealings.
