The Department of Rural Social Economics of the University of North Carolina was established under Eugene C. Branson in 1914. Samuel H. Hobbs, who had joined the department in 1916 as an instructor, replaced Branson in 1933 as chairman. The program became a curriculum within the Department of Sociology in 1938.

Record include correspondence and other files relating to the administration of and academic programs in the Department of Rural Social Economics. Papers dated after 1938 deal with the continuation of coursework in rural social economics within the Department of Sociology.
