| Abstract | The Carolina Folk Festival was established in December 1947 as an activity of the University of North Carolina's Folklore Council. Bascom Lamar Lunsford, director of the Annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, N.C., was the moving force in the festival's establishment and organized the first festival, held 18-19 June 1948. Lunsford became director of the Carolina Folk Festival. The records of the Carolina Folk Festival consist of files of Russell Marvin Grumman, director of the university's Extension Division and chairman of the Folklore Council. They detail the establishment of the Carolina Folk Festival and the organization of the annual festivals held from 1948 through 1953. |
