Historical NoteThe Carolina Folk Festival was established in December 1947 as an activity of the University's Folklore Council. Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Director of the Annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, N.C., was the moving force in the Festival's establishment and organized the first Festival, held 18-19 June 1948. Lunsford became director of the Carolina Folk Festival.
