| Abstract | The Society of the Sigma Xi was founded at Cornell University in 1886 to encourage original research in the pure and applied sciences. The University of North Carolina Chapter was chartered on 30 December 1919 and held its first meeting on 26 May 1920. In addition to lectures held throughout the year, the main function of the chapter was the annual initiation ceremony held in conjunction with the annual meeting during the University's commencement week. Records of the University of North Carolina Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi include correspondence with local members, prospective lecturers, and national Sigma Xi officials; membership nominations, acceptances, and rolls; lecture announcements; and minutes of meetings. Also included are the charter of the chapter, society diplomas, and petitions for the establishment of new Sigma Xi chapters. |

Scope and Content
Records of the University of North Carolina Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi consist largely of chronologically arrranged files including correspondence with local members, prospective lecturers, and national Sigma Xi officials; membership nominations, acceptances, and rolls; lecture announcements; minutes of meetings; and materials related to the election of officers. In addition, there are society diplomas, 1927-1951; the society's record book, 1920-1952, which includes materials similar to those in the chronological files; petitions for the establishment of new Sigma Xi chapters, 1913-1965; and the original charter of the University of North Carolina Chapter.
