| Abstract | In 1879 the Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded for medical and pharmacy students. A chapter was established at the University of North Carolina in 1915. In 1925 Kappa Psi officially split into the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity and the Theta Kappa Psi Medical Fraternity. The two orgainizations then issued new charters to the chapters. The Upsilon Chapter of the Theta Kappa Psi Medical Fraternity drew members from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, while the Beta Xi Chapter of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity drew members from the School of Pharmacy. Scope and Content
The collection is the circa-1926 charter of the Upsilon Chapter of the Theta Kappa Psi Medical Fraternity. This charter states that it replaces the charter dated 1 May 1915. However, it lists the names of the original petitioning members from 1915: F. M. Patterson, C. P. Magnus (sic), R. H. Dixon, F. M. Angel, H. L. Cook, and J. P. Rousseau. Charles Preston Mangum, Rufus Herbert Dixon, Furman M. Angel, Henry Lilly Cook Jr., and James Parks Rousseau Jr. all received medical certificates from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1916. F. M. Patterson's connection is unclear.
