Abstract The Clinical Epidemiology Resource and Training Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established in 1986 as the fourth training center in the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN). INCLEN was created in 1980 as a project of the Rockefeller Foundation and became an independent organization in 1982. It sought to improve health care in the developing world by training clinicians from developing nations in research methods and sending them back to their home countries to conduct research in Clinical Epidemiology Units (CEUs). The Clinical Epidemiology Resource and Training Centers (also called Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training Centers), or CERTCs, coordinated with the CEUs at INCLEN member institutions, and each CERTC received reports from and provided input to the CEUs. The CERTC at UNC-Chapel Hill was administratively part of the School of Medicine but worked in close collaboration with the School of Public Health. In the mid-to-late 1990s, INCLEN underwent a reorganization, after which responsibility for training was transferred to medical schools in the developing countries. Funding for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill CERTC's training program ended as of 30 June 1997. Correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, conference proceedings, and other materials related to the administration and activities of the Clinical Epidemiology Resource and Training Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its relations with the Executive Office of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN), other Clinical Epidemiology Resource and Training Centers (CERTCs), and Clinical Epidemiology Units (CEUs) around the world. Records directly related to the UNC-Chapel Hill program include annual reports; budgets and financial materials; program descriptions and publicity; and curriculum committee records. Also included are agendas, programs, and other materials related to the annual meetings of INCLEN and its regional subgroups; and correspondence and reports related to two INCLEN advisory committees. There are also numerous files concerning the activities of CEUs in developing countries, including site visit reports and other documents, as well as reports and program descriptions of other CERTCs.

In 1993, it was responsible for coordinating CEU programs in Chile, Colombia, India, Nairobi, and Uganda.

In the mid-to-late 1990s, INCLEN underwent a reorganization, after which responsibility for training was transferred to medical schools in the developing countries. Clinical Epidemiology Resource and Training Centers in the United States and Canada became part of a regional network known as CanUSACLEN. They no longer provided training but continued to engage in research projects and to collaborate with other INCLEN regional networks. Funding for the CERTC training program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ended as of 30 June 1997.
