Abstract The first band at the University of North Carolina was organized in 1903 with Charles T. Woollen as its director. By 1920, the band had become a regular part of football games. By the mid-1960s, there were several bands, including a marching band, concert band, and pep band; and the original band had become known as the Marching Tar Heels. From the 1920s through the mid-1960s, the Department of Music was responsible for the direction of the bands. Responsibility then shifted to the Division of Student Affairs until 1989, when it returned to the Department of Music. As of 2012, the Marching Tar Heels were directed by Jeffrey Fuchs of the Department of Music. Records include photographs, memoranda, training materials for marching band members, press packets, clippings, and other related materials. There are also an unbound proof copy of the commemorative book The Marching Tar Heels, a drawing of Kenan Memorial Field, and a poster advertising a football pep rally.

The first band at the University of North Carolina was organized in 1903 with Charles T. The Marching Tar Heels performed at all home games and one away game per football season, and band members performed in pep bands throughout the rest of the academic year.

Sometime in the mid-1920s, T. Smith McCorkle, an instructor in the Department of Music, began directing the band. In 1933, Earl Slocum was hired to direct the band and conduct the university orchestra. Herbert Fred took over as band director in 1956. In 1963, Slocum hired Major John F. Yesulaitis, who remained director of the Marching Tar Heels (and director of University Bands) until 1989, when he was succeeded by James Hile. As of 2012, the Marching Tar Heels were directed by Jeffrey Fuchs of the Department of Music.
