Collection Overview
| Size | 9.0 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 7200 items) |
| Abstract | The Office of Information and Communications was established in October 1997 to promote graduate education and research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by reporting the University's research activities and by helping researchers and students find opportunities for funding. The office assumed responsibility for the GrantSource Library and research publications, which had been among the responsibilities of the Office of Research Services and, earlier, the Office of Research Administration. Records consist chiefly of materials related to the publication of Endeavors magazine, 1984-1999, especially the 1993 issue devoted to the University Bicentennial. Included are transcripts of issues, photographs, and audiotapes of interviews. The Bicentennial issue materials also include multiple drafts of a University history timeline and short histories of numerous University departments. There are also reports produced by the Office of Research Services; copies of newsletters published by the Office of Research Administration and the Office of Research Services; and materials relating to the founding of the GrantSource Library, including usage statistics from its early years. |

Historical Information
The 1996-1997 annual report of the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research noted the creation, on 1 October 1997, of the Office of Information and Communications. "The mission of the Office of Information and Communications (OIC) is to promote graduate education and research at UNC-Chapel Hill by reporting the University's achievements and by helping researchers and students find opportunities for funding. ... Staff and resources for this new office were drawn primarily from the Office of Research Services (ORS), which previously had included the GrantSource Library and research publications."
The Office of Research Services and its predecessor, the Office of Research Administraion, had been the offices chiefly responsible for the administration of sponsored research since the 1960s, including the dissemination of information about the University's research activities and about funding sources for research projects. The offices published several newsletters and, beginning in 1984, the magazine Endeavors. The Office of Research Services also provided other research support services, including the GrantSource Library, a large online repository of grant information for student and faculty researchers. The Office of Information and Communications assumed these responsibilities in 1997, following a reorganization of the Office of Research Services.
The Office of Information and Communications initially reported to the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research. Through several administrative realignments and name changes, the latter became the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research (2001), Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development (2003), and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (2011). As of 2011, the Office of Information and Communications had become the Office of Research Communications, reporting to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
