Abstract Kappa Sigma Fraternity originated at the University of Bologna in Italy in 1400. The first chapter in the United States was founded at the University of Virginia in 1869. The Alpha Mu Chapter was established at the University of North Carolina in 1893. Its founding members were George Roscoe Little, Gerard Samuel Wittson, James Spenser Lewis, Thomas Pleasant Braswell, Jr., and Thomas Menan Hooker. The fraternity stressed fellowship, leadership, scholarship, and service. Records of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity include the original charter, dated 27 May 27 1893, and a copy of a photograph of the members from the 1894 Hellenian.
