Abstract The Department of Physical Education and Athletics was created in 1935. By the 1938-1939 academic year, both an undergraduate major and a master's degree program had been established. Initially the department included both academic instruction in physical education and the previously existing intercollegiate athletics program, but by the mid-1950s, these two branches had begun to operate autonomously, and the academic program became known simply as the Department of Physical Education. In 1980, efforts began to modernize the department's curriculum. These included multiple attempts to establish a Ph.D. program. During this process, the department's name was changed from Department of Physical Education to Department of Physical Education, Exercise, and Sport Science. In 1999, it was again changed to Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Records consist mostly of routine administrative documents from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Exercise and Sport Science and its predecessors. Annual reports, 1938-1992, often include related letters and memoranda, items related to department awards and achievements, and individual faculty members' reports. Topics include attempts to update its athletic facilities for a growing female population. Faculty meeting minutes, 1980-2000, also contain related memoranda. The records also include manuals and procedures, 1992-2001, related to the graduate program and a 1992 Ph.D. program proposal. Of particular interest are discussions of curriculum, especially the graduate program, in the annual reports and faculty minutes and discussion in the annual reports of the department's involvement in military training during World War II.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

The Department of Physical Education and Athletics was created in 1935. Its implementation took a number of years; issues concerning adequate facilities and college credit were among many that had to be addressed. By the 1938-1939 academic year, both an undergraduate major and a master's degree program had been established. Initially the department included both academic instruction in physical education and the previously existing intercollegiate athletics program. Robert A. Fetzer, who was already serving as director of athletics, was the first director of the combined department, while Professor Oliver K. Cornwell was director of physical education, that is, the academic program. Following Fetzer's retirement in 1952, Cornwell became chair of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. By 1955, however, the department's two components had been separated, leaving Cornwell as chair of the Department of Physical Education. In 1967, Richard E. Jamerson replaced Cornwell as chair, and, in 1970, Carl S. Blyth took the position. Though it had been an issue before, Blyth's administration attempted to revise the curriculum and improve the facilities for its female students, a process that would remain a priority for a number of years. In 1980, John Billing became chair, and an effort was made to modernize the program's scope, including multiple attempts to establish a Ph.D. program. It was during these attempts to update the curriculum that the department's name was changed from the Department of Physical Education to the Department of Physical Education, Exercise, and Sport Science. In 1995, Frederick O. Mueller became the head of the department; and, in 1999, the department's name was again changed to Department of Exercise and Sport Science.
