Historical Information
The University of North Carolina Hospitals Volunteer Association was formed in March 1952 as the North Carolina Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary. The auxiliary began proving services when the hospital opened in September 1952. In its early days, it operated the hospital hospitality shop, a library cart, and an information desk. Members also sewed for the hospital, decorated waiting rooms, visited patients, and provided clothing and amenities for indigent patients. Over the years, the auxiliary added other services including a beauty shop for patients, a well-baby clinic, infant photographs, interpreter services for non-English speaking patients, and television rental for patients' rooms. The auxiliary also began to offer outreach to the community by providing hospital tours for visitors and student groups and by hosting an annual Health Careers Fair for students. Through its shops and other fundraisers, it raised money for nursing scholarships, grants to hospital departments for equipment and other purchases, and a social welfare fund for patients in need.
In 1960, Candy Stripers were organized at the hospital, and students began to volunteer. The Candy Stripers program was renamed Junior Volunteers in 1970. In 1967, the auxiliary's name changed to North Carolina Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and men began to volunteer. The name changed again, in 1981, to North Carolina Memorial Hospital Volunteer Association. After University of North Carolina Hospitals became the name of the entire hospital complex in 1989, the association changed its name to University of North Carolina Hospitals Volunteer Association.
