GRADUATE SCHOOL RECORD GROUPS

The University began offering graduate courses after its reopening in 1875 and awarded its first Ph.D. degree in 1883. But it was not until 1903 that the various graduate offerings were brought into a single department (later school) under the supervision of a dean.

Prior to 1965 and again from 1978 to 1989, the Dean of the Graduate School had responsibility for research administration as well as graduate programs. From 1969 to 1989, the Dean also had vice chancellor status.

Currently, the Dean of the Graduate School reports to the Provost and no longer has responsibility for research administration. The majority of the Dean's records listed below deal with graduate programs, but they do contain some files related to the Office of Research Services. For more records dealing with research administration, see Research and Economic Development.
